Angola’s state-owned energy company Sonangol and the National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG) have announced positive results from the Katambi-2 appraisal well offshore Angola, confirming the presence of good quality hydrocarbon reservoirs and strengthening confidence in the country’s offshore exploration prospects.
The companies said the appraisal well successfully intersected two productive intervals, confirming reservoir continuity and favorable geological characteristics in the Katambi area. Initial well data indicate that the reservoir sections encountered have strong petrophysical properties, an encouraging sign for future development studies and commercial evaluation.
Part of a broader appraisal campaign
Katambi-2 is part of Sonangol’s ongoing appraisal programme in the Kwanza Basin, designed to determine the size, quality, and commercial potential of hydrocarbons discovered in the frontier offshore area. The well follows earlier exploration success at Katambi-1, which identified significant gas and condensate resources in the basin.
Drilling operations began earlier this year using the Saipem 12000 drillship in water depths of about 667 meters, reflecting Angola’s continued focus on technically challenging deepwater exploration. Industry sources say the appraisal campaign is intended to reduce subsurface uncertainty and support decisions on potential field development options.
Positive signal for Angola’s offshore sector
The successful appraisal comes as Angola seeks to reverse declining crude oil production by accelerating offshore exploration and bringing new discoveries into development. The government has prioritized deepwater and frontier basin projects as part of its strategy to maintain Angola’s position among Africa’s leading oil producers.
Analysts say confirmation of good reservoir quality is particularly important because it suggests the Katambi structure may have stronger commercial potential than initially expected, especially if future drilling confirms larger recoverable volumes and allows tie-back opportunities to existing offshore infrastructure.
Commercial evaluation continues
Sonangol and ANPG have not yet released resource estimates, flow-test results, or potential production timelines for Katambi-2. Additional geological and engineering studies will be required before determining the field’s commercial viability and any future development concept.
However, the latest results are expected to boost investor confidence in Angola’s upstream sector, which has been seeking fresh capital for offshore oil and gas projects amid growing competition for global exploration investment.
Strategic importance
Angola has recently intensified efforts to attract international partners through licensing reforms, improved fiscal terms, and expanded offshore exploration opportunities. The encouraging Katambi-2 findings add momentum to that strategy and reinforce the potential of the Kwanza Basin as an important area for future hydrocarbon growth.
For now, the appraisal well represents a notable exploration success for Sonangol and ANPG, confirming productive reservoir intervals and providing a stronger technical foundation for continued evaluation of one of Angola’s most closely watched offshore frontier projects.
