Trump’s Nominee Takes Leadership of U.S. Public Health Agency

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Dr. Erica Schwartz as the new Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Dr. Schwartz, President Donald Trump’s third nominee to lead the agency, was confirmed by a 51-44 vote in the Senate.

She becomes the 22nd permanent Director of the CDC and assumes leadership of the nation’s top public health agency after it spent nearly a year without a permanent director.

Dr. Schwartz takes office during a period of significant transition for the CDC, following thousands of staff departures resulting from layoffs, resignations, and leadership changes during the second Trump administration.

Her appointment comes as the agency works to rebuild stability and address ongoing public health priorities after a period marked by organisational challenges and low staff morale.

The Trump administration says it expects Dr. Schwartz to strengthen the agency’s leadership and improve its effectiveness in protecting public health across the United States.
