Heavy rain has continued to lash Beijing, forcing authorities to close tourist attractions, suspend public transport and evacuate residents from areas at high risk of flooding and geological disasters.

More than 300 tourist and camping sites have been closed, while operations at more than 4,100 rural homestays have been suspended.

Authorities have also halted around 250 bus routes, while trains on 10 subway lines have been ordered to operate at reduced speeds. All sightseeing boat services have also been suspended as officials work to protect residents and visitors.

Residents in mountainous villages, low-lying communities and other vulnerable areas have been evacuated as the risk of flooding and landslides increases. More than 5,000 elderly people have also been moved from care facilities to safer locations.

Beijing recorded an average of 23.5 millimetres of rainfall between noon Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

The National Meteorological Center has renewed an orange alert for torrential rain and forecast heavy rainfall across a wide area of China through Thursday morning.

Emergency authorities remain on high alert as they monitor rainfall, flooding and potential geological disasters, while residents are being urged to follow safety instructions and avoid high-risk areas.
