Prisoner Swap Completed With UAE Mediation
Russia and Ukraine have exchanged 103 prisoners of war each in their latest prisoner swap, providing another rare point of cooperation between the two sides as broader efforts to end the war. The exchange took place on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) helping to mediate the agreement.
Zelenskyy Confirms Return of Ukrainian Soldiers
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that 103 Ukrainian service members had returned home from Russian captivity. The group included personnel from Ukraine’s Armed Forces, National Guard and State Border Guard Service, with some having been captured while serving in several frontline areas, including defenders linked to Mariupol.
Medical Care and Rehabilitation for Returnees
Ukraine said many of the returning soldiers had suffered injuries or serious illnesses during captivity. They are expected to undergo medical examinations and receive psychological and physical rehabilitation as they begin the process of returning to civilian and military life.
Russia Reports Return of Its Servicemen
Russia’s Defence Ministry said 103 Russian servicemen were also returned. The soldiers were initially transferred to Belarus, where they were due to receive medical and psychological assistance before being transported to Russia for further treatment and rehabilitation.
UAE’s Ongoing Mediation Role
The UAE has played an increasingly important humanitarian role in facilitating prisoner exchanges between Moscow and Kyiv. Such exchanges, along with the return of the remains of fallen soldiers, remain among the few areas where Russia and Ukraine have maintained limited cooperation since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Limited Progress Amid Ongoing Conflict
The latest swap comes as diplomatic efforts to secure a broader peace agreement remain questionable. Despite continued negotiations and humanitarian contacts, the two governments remain far apart over the conditions for ending the conflict.
Humanitarian Significance of the Exchange
The exchange nevertheless offers a significant humanitarian development, returning more than 200 soldiers in total to their respective countries and renewing calls for further efforts to secure the release of thousands of people who remain in captivity.
