Belgrade Seeks Moscow’s Assistance as EU Firefighting Aircraft Remain Unavailable

Serbia has turned to Russia for assistance in battling widespread wildfires, after a shortage of available firefighting aircraft from the European Union left Belgrade looking for additional support.

Serbia’s Interior Ministry said it had requested Russian assistance as firefighters continue to confront blazes across parts of the country amid hot, dry and windy conditions.

The shortage of aircraft comes as several European countries are simultaneously dealing with severe wildfire outbreaks, placing significant pressure on the continent’s emergency-response resources.

Serbian authorities are using firefighting teams and available aircraft to contain the fires, while Russian support is expected to provide additional aerial capacity for operations in affected areas.

The decision highlights the scale of the wildfire emergency currently confronting parts of Europe, where prolonged heat and dry vegetation have increased the risk of rapidly spreading fires.

It also demonstrates how natural disasters can create unusual forms of international cooperation, with Serbia seeking assistance from Russia despite the wider geopolitical tensions between Moscow and many European governments.
