China and Indonesia have held high-level talks in Jakarta focused on strengthening security, defence, political and economic cooperation as both countries seek to deepen their strategic partnership amid growing geopolitical tensions in the region.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono on Friday as part of the first China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue. The discussions were followed by a ministerial “2+2” meeting involving the two countries’ defence ministers, Dong Jun and Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.
Defence and Regional Security
Defence cooperation was a major focus of the meetings, with both sides discussing military exchanges, defence-industry cooperation and joint exercises. China said there was considerable scope for its armed forces to work more closely with Indonesia to protect their national interests and respond to external security challenges.
The talks come as tensions remain sensitive in the South China Sea, where Indonesia has maintained a cautious position while pursuing its policy of maintaining strong relationships with both China and the United States.
Trade, Energy and Technology
Economic cooperation was another key priority. Indonesia and China agreed to expand bilateral trade beyond its current level of about US$167 billion, while exploring greater cooperation in minerals, energy, technology and maritime trade.
The two countries are also looking to expand cooperation in artificial intelligence, satellite technology, green energy and advanced technologies, alongside efforts to improve market access for Indonesian exports. China remains a major investor in Indonesia, with Chinese investment reaching about US$3.9 billion during the first half of 2026.
Balancing Major-Power Relations
The strengthening China-Indonesia relationship comes as Jakarta continues its policy of maintaining close ties with multiple major powers rather than aligning exclusively with either Beijing or Washington.
The latest talks are expected to provide a framework for deeper cooperation on development, security and regional stability while allowing Indonesia to pursue its economic interests amid wider global trade and geopolitical tensions.
