U.S. Revokes Nearly 900 Visas in Birth-Tourism Crackdown

The U.S. State Department has revoked nearly 900 visas since launching a task force targeting so-called birth tourism and alleged visa fraud, spokesperson Tommy Pigott said.

Pigott said the figure has increased significantly since the department announced the task force on August 12. At its launch, officials reported that more than 600 visas had already been revoked; the latest figure brings the total to nearly 900.

Focus on Birth-Tourism Networks

The administration says the campaign is aimed at networks that facilitate travel to the United States primarily for childbirth, particularly where officials believe applicants have misrepresented their intentions when seeking visitor visas.

According to the State Department, some networks allegedly market birth-tourism services and coach applicants on how to mislead U.S. consular officials. The department says such practices can involve visa fraud and impose significant medical costs.

The crackdown does not amount to a blanket prohibition on pregnant foreign nationals entering the United States. Rather, officials are focusing on cases where they determine that applicants violated visa rules or misrepresented the purpose of their travel.

Part of Wider Visa Enforcement

The latest action comes amid a broader Trump administration campaign to increase scrutiny of foreign nationals and tighten enforcement of U.S. immigration and visa rules.

Earlier this month, the State Department announced that it had revoked more than 175,000 visas during the Trump administration, with criminal activity, fraud and other alleged violations among the cited reasons.

The State Department has not released a detailed public breakdown of the nearly 900 birth-tourism-related revocations by nationality or country.

The latest figures underscore Washington’s increasingly aggressive approach to visa enforcement as the administration seeks to prevent what it considers abuse of the U.S. immigration system.
