Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in Egypt for an official state visit, where he is meeting President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to strengthen relations between Beijing and Cairo and discuss major regional and international developments.
The visit marks Xi’s first trip to Egypt in a decade and comes as the two countries celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations. Egypt was the first Arab and African country to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China in 1956.
According to Egypt’s presidency, the talks are focused on expanding cooperation across political, economic and development sectors, while also reviewing implementation of the China-Egypt Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement, signed in 2014.
Trade, Investment and Development
Economic cooperation is expected to be an important part of the discussions. Egypt has increasingly sought Chinese investment in areas including infrastructure, manufacturing, technology and industrial development, while Beijing views Egypt as an important economic and strategic partner in Africa and the Middle East.
The two governments are also expected to examine opportunities to deepen industrial cooperation and investment as Egypt seeks to expand its manufacturing base and strengthen its position as a regional trade and logistics hub.
Regional and International Issues
Beyond bilateral relations, Xi and el-Sisi are expected to exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.
The talks come amid continuing conflicts and geopolitical tensions across the Middle East and North Africa, giving the meeting wider diplomatic significance. Egypt has traditionally played an important mediation and diplomatic role in regional affairs, while China has expanded its political engagement with Middle Eastern countries.
Xi’s visit follows his participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and forms part of a wider diplomatic tour running from August 30 to September 3.
A New Chapter in China-Egypt Relations
The visit is being closely watched as Beijing and Cairo seek to build on seven decades of diplomatic relations. Both governments have described the partnership as increasingly comprehensive, covering politics, trade, investment, infrastructure and development.
Xi said ahead of the visit that he looked forward to working with el-Sisi to deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership and establish a new blueprint for cooperation.
The outcome of the talks could further strengthen China’s economic and diplomatic presence in Egypt while reinforcing Cairo’s strategy of maintaining broad international partnerships amid shifting global and regional alliances.
