Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government has reached a historic milestone, becoming the longest-serving uninterrupted government in the history of the Italian Republic.

Meloni’s right-wing coalition has now been in office for 1,413 days, surpassing the previous record of 1,412 days held by Silvio Berlusconi’s second government, which served from June 2001 to April 2005. Meloni took office on October 22, 2022, becoming Italy’s first woman prime minister.

The achievement is particularly significant in Italy, where governments have historically been vulnerable to coalition disputes and political changes. Since the republic was established in 1946, Italy has had 68 governments led by 31 prime ministers, with the average government lasting roughly 14 months.

Meloni credited the durability of her administration to the unity of her centre-right coalition and the continued support of Italian voters. In a statement marking the record, she said political stability should not simply be celebrated as an achievement, but should provide the foundation for long-term planning and decision-making.

Her government has promoted policies focused on employment, business, public finances, security and immigration while seeking to strengthen Italy’s influence within the European Union and internationally. Supporters argue that political stability has improved Italy’s credibility and created greater continuity in policymaking.

However, critics say the government still faces major challenges, including Italy’s weak economic growth, high public debt and the need for structural reforms in areas such as healthcare, education and productivity.

The milestone comes as Meloni looks toward the 2027 general election, when the longevity of her government will be tested at the ballot box. Her ability to maintain coalition unity and convert political stability into stronger economic and social results is likely to remain central to the next phase of her premiership.
