US First Lady Melania Trump has helped broker a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky, the White House has announced. The agreement is expected to take effect on October 29, allowing humanitarian aid to reach civilians and creating conditions for their evacuation through a designated safe passage.
According to the White House, Melania Trump initiated discussions with Russian and Ukrainian leadership and worked through a representative to establish the terms of the local ceasefire. The arrangement is focused on protecting civilians caught in the conflict rather than ending the wider war.
Oleshky, located in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region near the Dnipro River, has remained under Russian control since the early days of Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The city has suffered extensive damage, while shortages of food, medicine, electricity and clean water have worsened living conditions for those who remain.
Humanitarian Crisis Drives Ceasefire Efforts
Melania Trump described the situation in Oleshky as critical, warning that the city was on the brink of a humanitarian disaster. The remaining population consists largely of elderly residents and others who urgently need medical assistance, essential medicines, food and drinking water.
The proposed ceasefire is intended to provide a temporary window for humanitarian organisations and emergency teams to deliver supplies and facilitate civilian evacuations. However, the operation faces serious logistical and security challenges, including mined roads, damaged infrastructure and continued military activity around the frontline.
Before the war, Oleshky had a population of approximately 24,000 people. Reports indicate that only a small fraction of its former population remains in the city.
Diplomatic Efforts Amid the Ongoing War
The announcement adds a humanitarian dimension to the Trump administration’s broader efforts to bring Moscow and Kyiv back to negotiations. Melania Trump has previously pursued discussions concerning Ukrainian children taken to Russia during the war, making humanitarian issues a focus of her engagement.
The reported agreement comes as US officials continue diplomatic contacts with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with renewed discussions on a possible trilateral meeting.
Neither the Russian nor Ukrainian government had immediately issued a public statement confirming the newly announced local ceasefire at the time of reporting.
A Limited Agreement With Significant Humanitarian Stakes
Although the arrangement does not represent a nationwide ceasefire or a comprehensive peace agreement, it could provide a crucial opportunity to protect vulnerable civilians in one of the conflict’s most severely affected areas.
Its effectiveness will depend on whether both sides observe the agreed terms, allow humanitarian teams safe access and ensure that evacuation routes remain usable.
With winter approaching and essential supplies increasingly scarce, the planned October 29 ceasefire will be closely watched as an effort to relieve civilian suffering amid a war that continues to devastate communities across Ukraine.
