US President Donald Trump has called on Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar to resign from Congress after a federal court filing referenced an alternative version of her name. Omar’s spokesperson has rejected claims that she used a false identity, while the filing itself does not establish fraud or determine her eligibility to serve.
US President Donald Trump has demanded the immediate resignation of Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, citing a federal court filing that refers to her by variations of her name.
Trump made the remarks at a rally in Sioux City, Iowa, on Thursday, October 22, arguing that the reference raised questions about the name Omar used when she was elected and sworn into Congress. He also urged House Speaker Mike Johnson to take action, asserting that Omar should not be permitted to remain in office.
The controversy centres on a court document reportedly using the wording “also known as” to identify Omar by another name. However, the reference does not, by itself, establish that she used a fraudulent identity or violated any law. The filing was connected to a legal dispute over materials following a court-authorised search of her Washington, D.C.
Omar’s spokesperson rejected the allegation, stating that “Ilhan Omar is her real name.” The congresswoman has also previously denied allegations surrounding her former marriage, which Trump raised again in his remarks.
The latest development comes amid a federal investigation reportedly examining aspects of Omar’s immigration history and related documentation. Federal agents searched her residence earlier in October. Omar has described the investigation as politically motivated, while the Justice Department has said the search was part of an ongoing criminal investigation. Reports indicate that she has not been charged with a crime in connection with the probe.
The dispute has intensified political tensions ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections, with the allegations becoming part of the broader political confrontation between Trump and one of his prominent Democratic critics.
For now, Trump’s demand for Omar to resign remains a political call rather than a legal determination. The allegations surrounding her identity and past marriage have not been established by the court filing cited in his remarks.
