Binance to Resume Withdrawals After Recovering Bulk of $6 Billion in Stolen Funds

Cryptocurrency exchange Binance is preparing to resume withdrawals after recovering the bulk of approximately $6 billion in stolen funds, marking a significant development in its efforts to address a major security breach.

The recovery is expected to ease concerns among customers and investors who have been affected by the incident and raised questions about the security of digital asset platforms.

The disruption highlights the growing cybersecurity risks facing the cryptocurrency industry, where large volumes of digital assets remain attractive targets for sophisticated hackers.

Withdrawals to Resume in Phases

Binance announced that the first phase of withdrawals would begin between 0600 and 0900 GMT on Sunday, November 1. The initial rollout includes major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB, Solana, XRP and Dogecoin.

The company said the remaining 5% of stolen assets consists mainly of less-liquid tokens that could take longer to replace in the required quantities. Binance has also been working with law enforcement agencies and cryptocurrency industry partners to trace and freeze stolen funds.

FBI Links Attack to North Korean Cyber Unit

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has attributed the attack to TraderTraitor, a North Korean state-sponsored cyber unit. Investigators reportedly observed members of the group converting stolen assets into Ethereum and warned that further laundering activities could follow.

North Korea has repeatedly denied using state-linked cyber units for financial theft and other illegal activities.

The incident has renewed concerns about cybersecurity, digital asset protection and the vulnerability of major cryptocurrency exchanges. Although Binance’s recovery efforts represent a significant step towards restoring normal operations, the remaining unrecovered assets and ongoing investigation underline the challenges of combating sophisticated cybercrime.
