Mike Johnson Acknowledges Tough Challenge As Democrats Make Major Election Gains
Democrats have secured control of both the United States House of Representatives and the Senate following the 2026 midterm elections, ending Republican control of Congress and marking a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.
Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledged the difficulty his party faced in trying to retain its congressional majority, saying Republicans knew from the beginning that they would have to overcome more than a century of midterm election history to keep control of the House.
Speaking at an election night gathering in Shreveport, Louisiana, Johnson said: “From the first day of this election, we knew that to keep the House and sustain our majority, we would have to defy more than a century of midterm history. And it looks like history will be kept tonight.”
Johnson also expressed disappointment over the results, while warning that Democrats should not turn the next congressional session into what he described as a political circus.
The Democratic gains included victories in several traditionally Republican states, contributing to the party’s success in taking control of the Senate. The results also give Democrats control of the House, positioning them to exercise greater oversight over President Donald Trump’s administration.
The outcome is expected to reshape the final two years of Trump’s presidency, with Democrats preparing to pursue their legislative priorities and increase scrutiny of the administration.
The new Congress is expected to take office in January 2027, ushering in a period of divided government in Washington.
