On Tuesday, Donald Trump held a phone call with Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq to discuss the upcoming round of talks with Iran, set for this Saturday in Oman, the White House confirmed.
According to Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, Trump’s key message going into the negotiations is that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains a top priority. The two leaders also addressed current U.S. military actions targeting the Houthi forces in Yemen.
“The pressure campaign against Iran is still in full effect,” Leavitt said during a briefing. She explained that while Trump is open to diplomatic discussions, his stance on blocking Iran’s path to nuclear weapons is non-negotiable—a point he strongly reiterated during his call with the Sultan.
Last weekend’s talks between the U.S. and Iran in Oman were reportedly seen as constructive by both parties. Trump revived the pressure strategy earlier this year, a return to the policy he implemented during his first term after pulling the U.S. out of the 2015 nuclear agreement and reinstating tough sanctions on Iran.
While indirect talks took place under President Biden, they failed to deliver significant results, and Iran’s nuclear program has continued to advance in the meantime.
