EU Strongly Condemns U.S. Steel Tariff Hike, Prepares Countermeasures

The European Commission expressed strong disappointment over the announced rise in U.S. steel import tariffs. The EU emphasised that it is ready to respond with countermeasures.

U.S. President Donald Trump revealed plans to raise tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from 25% to 50%, escalating pressure on global steel markets and intensifying the ongoing trade conflict.

A Commission spokesperson stated in a message that this increase in steel tariffs is deeply regretted, as it creates more uncertainty for the global economy and drives up costs for both consumers and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic. The spokesperson also mentioned that this move hampers current efforts to negotiate a resolution.

They highlighted that the EU had temporarily held back its countermeasures to allow space for continued talks. However, the EU remains prepared to implement retaliatory actions in response to the tariff hike.

The European Commission is in the final stages of consulting on a broader set of countermeasures. If no agreement is reached, existing and new EU measures will automatically come into effect on July 14, or sooner if necessary.
