Former Zambian President Edgar Lungu Dies at 68 While Undergoing Treatment in South Africa

Zambia’s former President Edgar Lungu has passed away at the age of 68, according to an announcement made by his political party, the Patriotic Front. Lungu led the Southern African nation from 2015 until 2021, when he was defeated at the polls by the current president, Hakainde Hichilema.

The Patriotic Front shared the news of his death on Thursday, June 5, stating that Lungu died while receiving specialized medical care in South Africa. The party also noted that the information had been confirmed by his daughter and the family’s legal representative.

Lungu, a trained lawyer, rose to power following the death of President Michael Sata in 2014. He was initially elected in a closely contested vote in 2015 and re-elected in 2016. His presidency was marked by economic challenges, rising public debt, and growing concerns about democratic governance. Despite these issues, he remained a prominent figure in Zambian politics even after leaving office.

Tributes are expected to pour in from across the country and the region as Zambia comes to terms with the loss of its former leader. Further details regarding funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
