Greenland Opposition Urges Direct Talks With U.S. Without Danish Involvement

A senior Greenlandic opposition leader has called for direct dialogue between Greenland and the United States, bypassing Denmark, as U.S. President Donald Trump renews his push to bring the strategically located Arctic island under American control.

Pele Broberg, leader of the Naleraq party Greenland’s largest opposition group and a strong pro-independence movement said Greenland’s government should engage directly with Washington on matters of security and defence. Speaking in a televised interview, Broberg argued that Greenland must assert its political agency and pursue its own strategic interests without interference from Copenhagen.

Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, but defence and foreign policy remain under Danish control. Calls for greater independence have grown in recent years, driven by Greenland’s strategic importance, vast natural resources, and increasing global interest in the Arctic.

Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in Greenland, citing its geopolitical value amid rising competition in the Arctic involving Russia and China. While Denmark has rejected any suggestion of a sale, U.S. officials have expanded military and diplomatic engagement with Greenland, including the presence of a U.S. air base and increased security cooperation.

Broberg said direct talks with the U.S. would allow Greenland to better protect its interests and prepare for future independence, particularly as global powers intensify their focus on Arctic security and resource access. The Greenlandic government has not yet responded publicly to the comments.

Analysts say the renewed debate highlights growing tensions between Greenland’s independence ambitions, Denmark’s authority, and U.S. strategic interests in the Arctic, raising questions about the future political status of the island.
