U.S. Food Reset: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Calls for Overhaul of America’s Food Industry

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has called for what he describes as a major “reset” of the American food system, arguing that a large portion of the U.S. food supply is contributing to chronic disease and declining public health.

Speaking under the banner of the “MAHA” initiative Make America Healthy Again Kennedy said that up to 70% of the food consumed in the United States contains harmful additives, chemical preservatives, pesticides, and ultra-processed ingredients that he believes are undermining national health outcomes.

Kennedy has consistently criticized the widespread use of artificial colorings, seed oils, high-fructose corn syrup, and synthetic additives in packaged foods. He argues that the modern food environment prioritizes corporate profit over public wellbeing and has called for stronger transparency standards, revised labeling policies, and tighter regulation of chemical inputs in agriculture.

According to Kennedy, the surge in chronic illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, and childhood health conditions is closely linked to dietary patterns dominated by ultra processed foods. He has urged a shift toward whole foods, regenerative agriculture, and nutrient-dense diets as part of a broader public health strategy.

The proposed “food reset” includes increased scrutiny of food manufacturing practices, pesticide approvals, and agricultural subsidies. Supporters say the initiative represents a long overdue effort to realign the food industry with public health priorities. Critics, however, argue that such sweeping claims require careful scientific review and balanced regulatory approaches.

The debate comes at a time when Americans are increasingly concerned about food labeling, ingredient safety, and long term health impacts, fueling a broader national conversation about the future of the U.S. food system.
