A Namibian delegation comprising media professionals and think tank representatives has successfully concluded a week-long exchange programme in Shanghai, China, marking another milestone in the growing partnership between Namibia and China.
The Namibia–China Media and Think Tank People’s Exchange Programme, held from 29 June to 3 July 2026, brought together participants from both countries to deepen cooperation in media, research, innovation, culture and economic development. The initiative forms part of the 2026 China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, an ambitious framework aimed at strengthening mutual understanding and expanding collaboration between China and African nations.
Building Stronger People-to-People Relations
Throughout the exchange, the Namibian delegation visited leading Chinese institutions, research centres, technology companies, cultural landmarks and media organisations in Shanghai. Participants engaged in discussions on modern media development, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, urban planning, innovation and strategies for sustainable economic growth.
The programme offered Namibian delegates firsthand exposure to China’s rapid technological advancement and urban development while encouraging dialogue on how similar approaches could be adapted within Namibia’s own development agenda.
Organisers said the exchange was designed to foster stronger interpersonal relationships and promote long-term collaboration between journalists, researchers, academics, and policy experts from both countries.
Supporting the China–Africa Partnership
The programme aligns with broader efforts by Beijing to expand cooperation with African nations beyond trade and infrastructure by placing greater emphasis on educational, cultural, media, and knowledge exchanges.
China has increasingly promoted people-to-people diplomacy as a key pillar of its engagement with Africa, encouraging greater collaboration in journalism, education, healthcare, technology, tourism, and youth development.
For Namibia, the exchange provides opportunities to strengthen institutional partnerships while enabling delegates to gain insights into China’s economic transformation, digital economy, and governance practices.
Officials involved in the programme said such exchanges help create lasting networks that contribute to stronger diplomatic and economic relations over time.
Longstanding Namibia–China Relations
Namibia and China have maintained diplomatic relations since 1990, shortly after Namibia gained independence. Over the past three decades, bilateral cooperation has expanded significantly across infrastructure development, mining, energy, education, healthcare, agriculture, telecommunications, and trade.
China remains one of Namibia’s largest development and investment partners, with Chinese companies playing major roles in infrastructure construction, renewable energy projects, mining operations, and industrial development.
The two countries elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership in 2018, reflecting their shared commitment to expanding political, economic, and cultural cooperation.
Exchange Comes Amid Growing Diplomatic Engagement
The conclusion of the exchange programme also comes during a period of heightened diplomatic activity between the two nations.
Namibia has encouraged its citizens and institutions to actively participate in activities planned under the 2026 China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, viewing the initiative as an opportunity to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.
