South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has appointed Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, to temporarily represent the state in the U.S. Senate following the veteran lawmaker’s sudden death.
The appointment comes after President Donald Trump publicly urged McMaster to select Graham’s sister, describing the move as a fitting tribute to one of the Republican Party’s most influential senators. McMaster announced the appointment on Monday, saying Nordone will serve until early January 2027, when the winner of a special election is expected to take office.
A Temporary Appointment
Darline Graham Nordone is not expected to seek the Senate seat permanently. Her appointment is intended to ensure South Carolina maintains full representation in Washington while voters choose a long-term successor.
Under South Carolina law, a special Republican primary is scheduled for August 11, with a runoff, if necessary, on August 25, before the November 3 general election. The senator elected in November will assume office in January 2027.

Governor McMaster said the appointment recognizes Senator Graham’s decades of public service while providing continuity during a period of transition.
President Trump praised Nordone as someone who shared a close bond with her brother and said her temporary service would honor Graham’s legacy.
