U.S. President Donald Trump said China could potentially release a detained American pastor as part of ongoing negotiations with Washington, but suggested the case of jailed Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai would be far more difficult to resolve.
Trump made the remarks during a press briefing following meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, where the two leaders discussed trade, regional security, Taiwan and several high-profile detention cases involving religious activists and democracy advocates.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said talks involving a detained Christian pastor had shown “some progress,” though he did not provide the individual’s name or details about the discussions. He indicated Beijing may be open to a humanitarian gesture amid efforts to stabilize relations between the world’s two largest economies.
However, Trump appeared less optimistic about securing the release of Lai, the founder of the now-shuttered Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily and one of the most internationally recognized pro-democracy figures detained under Hong Kong’s national security law.
“Jimmy Lai is a tough one,” Trump reportedly said, acknowledging the sensitivity of the case for Chinese authorities.
Lai Case Remains a Major International Flashpoint
Lai, 78, has become a symbol of the crackdown on dissent in Hong Kong following the massive pro-democracy protests that shook the city in 2019.
The businessman and activist has been held in prison for years while facing multiple charges, including allegations of collusion with foreign forces under Beijing’s sweeping national security legislation imposed on Hong Kong in 2020.
Western governments, human rights organizations, and media freedom advocates have repeatedly called for Lai’s release, arguing that the charges are politically motivated and represent an attack on press freedom.
China, however, insists the case is strictly a matter of national security and internal law enforcement, rejecting accusations of political persecution.
US-China Relations Expand Beyond Trade
Trump’s comments highlighted how human rights issues remain intertwined with broader U.S.-China negotiations, even as both sides attempt to stabilize economic ties after years of tariff battles and geopolitical rivalry.
The Beijing summit focused heavily on trade and security issues, including tensions surrounding Taiwan, artificial intelligence restrictions, and ongoing disputes over technology exports.
Still, Trump appeared eager to portray the discussions as constructive, saying Washington and Beijing had made progress on “a lot of complicated matters.”

China Defends Hong Kong Security Crackdown
Chinese officials have consistently defended the national security law in Hong Kong, arguing it restored stability after the unrest of 2019.
Beijing maintains that foreign governments are interfering in China’s domestic affairs when they criticize Hong Kong prosecutions or demand the release of activists.
The Hong Kong government has also repeatedly denied accusations that judicial proceedings involving Lai are politically driven.
Critics, however, argue the law has effectively dismantled political opposition and sharply curtailed freedoms previously guaranteed under the “one country, two systems” framework established after Britain returned Hong Kong to China in 1997.
Religious Freedom Concerns Also Raised
Trump’s mention of a detained pastor underscored continuing U.S. concerns over religious freedom in China.
Washington has frequently criticized Beijing over restrictions on underground Christian churches, Muslim minorities in Xinjiang, Tibetan Buddhists and other religious communities.
China rejects those allegations and says it protects lawful religious activity while combating extremism and separatism.
The White House did not immediately release additional details regarding the pastor’s identity or the status of negotiations.
Diplomatic Calculations Continue
Observers say Trump’s comments may signal an attempt to combine human rights diplomacy with broader negotiations over trade and regional stability.
However, analysts caution that the politically charged nature of Lai’s case makes any breakthrough unlikely in the near term.
Despite signs of improving communication between Washington and Beijing, deep disagreements remain over human rights, Taiwan, technology restrictions, and military influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Trump-Xi summit ended without any formal announcement regarding detainees, though both governments indicated discussions would continue in the weeks ahead.
