Launch Comes Amid Heightened Tensions on the Korean Peninsula

North Korea has fired a suspected ballistic missile toward the sea, according to Japan’s government and coast guard, marking another weapons launch by Pyongyang amid heightened tensions in the region.

South Korean media also reported that the country’s military detected an unidentified projectile launched toward waters off the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula.

Japan’s Coast Guard said the projectile, believed to be a ballistic missile, had already fallen into the sea. Japanese reports indicated that it appeared to have landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, with no immediate reports of damage.

The launch comes at a particularly sensitive moment, following recent developments surrounding U.S.-South Korean military exercises and President Donald Trump’s efforts to reopen diplomatic engagement with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Trump has said he wants to meet Kim again later this year as Washington seeks to revive negotiations with Pyongyang. North Korea, however, has remained critical of U.S. military policy and has dismissed recent efforts to scale back joint U.S.-South Korean drills as insufficient.
