Cairo Calls for De-escalation, Diplomacy and Safe Navigation of International Waterways
Egypt has stressed the importance of implementing the U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding and intensifying diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions across the Middle East.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty raised the issue during a phone call with U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, according to Egypt’s Foreign Ministry. The two officials discussed regional developments and efforts to contain the escalation.
Abdelatty described the memorandum as a constructive step toward easing tensions and strengthening security and stability in the region. He called for the understandings contained in the agreement to be implemented and urged greater regional and international efforts to prevent the conflict from spreading.
Egypt Pushes for Diplomatic Solution
Cairo has continued to advocate for political and diplomatic solutions, arguing that dialogue is essential to resolving the region’s crises and preventing further military escalation.
The latest call follows previous Egyptian diplomatic contacts with both U.S. and Iranian officials. Egypt has sought to maintain communication channels with the parties involved while encouraging a return to negotiations.
Strait of Hormuz Remains Critical
The security of international waterways was also discussed during the call, with Abdelatty stressing the importance of safe and unrestricted navigation.
The issue is particularly significant because of continuing tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy shipments and international trade.
Egypt warned that disruptions to major shipping routes could affect global supply chains, energy security and economies far beyond the Middle East. Cairo therefore called for international waterways to remain protected from the consequences of regional conflict.
A Push to Prevent Wider Conflict
Egypt’s latest diplomatic intervention comes as regional tensions remain elevated and efforts continue to revive the U.S.-Iran diplomatic track.
For Cairo, implementing the memorandum could provide a framework for reducing hostilities and creating conditions for broader negotiations.
The Egyptian government is urging the parties to move away from further military escalation and toward dialogue, diplomacy and practical arrangements that can restore regional security and stability.
With the Middle East already facing significant political and security pressures, Egypt’s message is that preventing the conflict from widening must remain an urgent priority.
