Russian President Vladimir Putin told U.S. President Donald Trump that Moscow wants a swift end to the war in Ukraine and supports restoring relations between Russia and the United States, the Kremlin said on Tuesday.
The comments came during a phone call between the two leaders as Washington intensifies diplomatic efforts to revive negotiations aimed at ending the conflict. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov described the conversation as constructive and said the presidents discussed the results of recent U.S. diplomatic contacts with both Moscow and Kyiv.
Renewed U.S. diplomatic push
The call follows visits to Moscow and Kyiv by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The two officials have been working to advance President Trump’s efforts to find a path toward ending the war, with discussions in Moscow described by U.S. officials as involving substantive proposals for the next stage of negotiations.
The Kremlin has also said it does not rule out restarting broader peace talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States, although officials have cautioned that details such as timing and location have yet to be agreed.
Moscow seeks improved ties with Washington
According to the Kremlin, Putin expressed support for rebuilding U.S.-Russia relations, which have deteriorated sharply since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. A restoration of bilateral ties could potentially extend beyond the Ukraine conflict to wider diplomatic and economic cooperation.
Putin also reportedly told Trump that Russia has no aggressive intentions toward Europe, according to Kremlin statements reported by the Associated Press.
Fighting continues despite diplomatic efforts
The diplomatic activity comes as fighting continues on the ground. Russia launched a fresh wave of missile and drone attacks on Kyiv on Tuesday shortly after the U.S. envoys left Ukraine, killing civilians and damaging residential and public infrastructure, according to Ukrainian authorities and media outlet.
The renewed attacks underscore the difficulties facing negotiators, with major questions surrounding territorial control, security guarantees and the conditions for a lasting settlement still unresolved.
