Ottawa Says Tehran Must Never Be Allowed to Acquire Nuclear Weapons

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has reiterated Ottawa’s position on Iran, describing Tehran as a “principal threat to peace and security” in the region and saying Iran must never be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon.

Anand made the remarks as Canada announced additional sanctions targeting five individuals and five entities under the Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations.

The Canadian government said the measures were introduced in response to what it described as the Iranian regime’s crackdown on its own population.

Ottawa’s latest action adds to Canada’s existing sanctions framework against Iranian individuals and organisations. The government has continued to use economic and diplomatic measures to pressure Tehran over human rights concerns and its broader regional activities.

Anand said Canada’s position on Iran remains unequivocal, particularly regarding nuclear proliferation and regional security.

The announcement comes amid continued international concern over Iran’s nuclear programme and tensions surrounding Tehran’s relations with Western governments.

Canada’s latest sanctions underscore Ottawa’s stated policy of combining diplomatic pressure with targeted economic measures as it seeks to respond to developments in Iran.
