Belarus President Lukashenko demands compensation from Russia for delayed launch of Belarus Nuclear Power Plant.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP), financed by Moscow with a $10 billion loan, and has been a symbol of Moscow’s influence in the region. Belarus and Russia have maintained strong relations, particularly since the conflict in Ukraine.

Despite not directly participating in the conflict, Lukashenko’s administration has allowed Russian troops to conduct exercises on Belarusian territory. The completion of the BelNPP was delayed multiple times due to repairs, a fact that Lukashenko has used to demand compensation from Russia.

Lukashenko emphasized the importance of safety in operating the plant, stating that even the smallest details need to be considered.

He pointed out that Russia offered to sell nuclear fuel to Belarus at the same rate as it does to Russian power stations and offered a five-year warranty on major components as compensation. However, Lukashenko is assessing whether these concessions are sufficient for Belarus.
