Africa Energy Indaba 2024: ‘We must ensure that we address energy poverty’

The Minister of Mineral Resources, Gwede Mantashe.

In Cape Town, the 16th Africa Energy Indaba started at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Tuesday. The event focuses on the importance of African countries investing in gas infrastructure, like expanding pipelines. The theme for this 3-day event is “African Energy Transitioning from Aspiration to Action – Delivering a Sustainable and Prosperous Future,” and it has over 350 CEOs from Africa and around the world attending, representing the interests of more than 37 African countries.

The Africa Energy Indaba showcases energy technologies, innovations, and solutions that are shaping Africa’s energy landscape. Exhibitors highlight cutting-edge technologies, projects, and initiatives driving the continent’s transition to renewable energy. The conference is a unique platform for participants to explore investment opportunities, financing mechanisms, and partnership models, with a significant focus on developing renewable energy projects across the continent.

Minister Gwede Mantashe, who opened the Indaba, emphasized Africa’s abundance of natural resources. He highlighted the importance of these resources for a fair energy transition, mentioning the potential use of uranium in various nuclear applications, including generating clean energy. With the growing demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) globally, Mantashe stressed the need for the Southern African Development Community to invest in the upstream petroleum industry and position itself as a key player in supplying these critical resources.
