Emergency services were placed on high alert in Crete on Thursday after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the Greek island, sending tremors across parts of Turkey and Israel.
The undersea quake, which occurred in the early hours, was centered south of Crete and was felt in several neighboring countries. Despite the strength of the tremor, Greece’s fire brigade confirmed that it had not received any calls for assistance, and there were no immediate reports of injuries or significant property damage.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, as aftershocks are possible. Seismologists say the quake occurred at a moderate depth, which may have limited its impact on the surface.
Greece is located in a seismically active region and regularly experiences earthquakes, though most are minor and cause limited damage.
No tsunami warnings were issued, and operations at major airports and ports in Crete were reported to be unaffected.
