President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he is shortening the 50-day deadline he had previously given Russia to take steps toward ending the war in Ukraine. His decision highlights growing dissatisfaction with Russian leader Vladimir Putin over the ongoing conflict.
Speaking alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a visit to Scotland, Trump said, “I’m disappointed in President Putin. I’m going to cut down the 50 days I gave him because I already have a sense of how this is going to turn out.” He did not specify a new timeline during the remarks.
Earlier this month, Trump had set the 50-day window for Russia to move toward resolving the war. Throughout his term, he has often expressed frustration over Russia’s continued military actions despite U.S. diplomatic efforts.
Before returning to office, Trump had pledged to bring the war—now more than three years old—to an end within 24 hours. He has recently warned of potential new sanctions targeting Russia and countries that continue to trade with it, unless a resolution is reached by early September.
Although Trump has taken a firm stance publicly, he has at times stopped short of backing up his rhetoric with concrete action, citing a previously positive relationship with Putin. He has also been critical of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, adding another layer of complexity to his administration’s approach.
“We thought things were resolved more than once,” Trump said. “Then suddenly, Putin launches missiles into a city like Kyiv, killing innocent people, including those in places like nursing homes. That’s not how peace is made.”
Later on Monday, Trump indicated that a revised deadline of 10 to 12 days could be imposed for Moscow to show tangible progress toward ending the war.
