The Kingdom of Eswatini is preparing to host the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Sustainable Energy Week 2027, a landmark regional event that is expected to bring together policymakers, energy experts, investors, development partners, and private sector leaders to advance Southern Africa’s sustainable energy agenda.
The conference, scheduled to take place from 15 to 19 March 2027 at the Palazzo International Convention Centre in Ezulwini, is expected to attract more than 800 delegates from across the SADC region and beyond. The event will serve as a platform for discussing solutions to the region’s energy challenges while promoting investment in renewable energy and energy infrastructure.
A Platform for Regional Energy Cooperation
Hosted under the theme “Unlocking Investment for Sustainable Energy, Energy Access and Energy Security,” the week-long event will focus on strengthening regional cooperation to improve electricity access, enhance energy security, and accelerate the transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy systems.
Participants will include government ministers, utility companies, financial institutions, renewable energy developers, researchers, and international development organizations. Discussions will center on policy reforms, financing mechanisms, innovation, and cross-border energy projects aimed at driving economic growth throughout Southern Africa.
Eswatini Takes Over Hosting Duties
Eswatini was officially announced as the host of the 2027 edition during the closing ceremony of the 2026 SADC Sustainable Energy Week held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, where the country received the hosting baton from Zimbabwe.
The opportunity is being viewed as a significant milestone for Eswatini, reflecting growing confidence in the country’s ability to host major regional conferences while showcasing its progress in developing a modern and sustainable energy sector.
Government Sees Major Investment Opportunity
Minister for Natural Resources and Energy Prince Lonkhokhela said the event presents an important opportunity for Eswatini to attract new investment into its energy sector and strengthen partnerships that can help deliver reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity.
He noted that many countries within the SADC region continue to face power shortages, increasing electricity demand, and the need for greater investment in renewable energy technologies. Hosting the conference, he said, will allow Eswatini to highlight its renewable energy potential while encouraging greater collaboration among member states.
Focus on Renewable Energy and Innovation
The conference will feature ministerial dialogues, investment forums, business networking sessions, technical workshops, and exhibitions showcasing the latest developments in renewable energy, battery storage, clean cooking technologies, energy efficiency, smart grids, and innovative financing solutions.
Industry leaders are expected to explore ways of mobilizing both public and private sector investment to accelerate renewable energy deployment and improve energy access across Southern Africa.
Preparations Already Underway
Preparations for the event have already begun, with the Government of Eswatini working closely with the SADC Secretariat, the SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE), development partners, and industry stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of the conference.
Organizers say the event will also provide opportunities for local businesses, tourism operators, and service providers, generating economic benefits while raising Eswatini’s profile as a destination for international conferences.
Supporting Regional Energy Security
The SADC Sustainable Energy Week has become one of the region’s premier energy gatherings, providing a forum for member states to coordinate policies, share technological innovations, and develop partnerships that support long-term energy resilience.
As Southern Africa continues to pursue universal electricity access and greater use of renewable energy, the 2027 conference is expected to play an important role in shaping regional energy policy and unlocking new investment that will help drive sustainable development for years to come.
By hosting the event, Eswatini aims to reinforce its commitment to regional cooperation and position itself as an emerging hub for sustainable energy investment, innovation, and dialogue in Southern Africa.
