China has officially confirmed that Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul will undertake an official visit to Beijing from July 16 to 20, underscoring the growing strategic partnership between the two Asian nations amid expanding cooperation in trade, investment, technology, and regional security.
The announcement was made on Monday by China’s Foreign Ministry, which said the visit will take place at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang. During the five-day trip, Anutin is expected to hold high-level meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and Chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee Zhao Leji.
First Official Visit Since Taking Office
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian described the visit as Prime Minister Anutin’s first official trip to China since assuming office, saying it reflects the importance both governments place on strengthening bilateral ties.
In addition to official talks, Anutin will attend the 2026 World AI Conference & High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance, scheduled to take place in Shanghai from July 17 to 20. President Xi Jinping is expected to deliver a keynote address at the conference, where global leaders, technology executives, and researchers will discuss the future of artificial intelligence and international AI governance.
Expanding China–Thailand Cooperation
The visit is expected to focus on advancing cooperation across several sectors, including:
- Trade and investment
- Infrastructure and transport connectivity
- Digital economy and artificial intelligence
- Green energy and industrial development
- Tourism recovery
- Regional security and law enforcement cooperation
China has described Thailand as a “good neighbor, good friend, good relative and good partner,” emphasizing the two countries’ long-standing relationship and commitment to building a stronger China–Thailand community with a shared future.
Building on Strong Diplomatic Relations
The visit follows a series of high-level exchanges between the two countries over the past year. In 2025, Thailand and China marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, highlighted by the historic state visit of Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn to China.
Earlier this year, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also met Prime Minister Anutin in Bangkok, where both sides agreed to deepen cooperation on economic development, regional connectivity, cybersecurity, and combating transnational crime, including online scam networks operating across Southeast Asia.
Regional Significance
Analysts say the visit comes at a time when Southeast Asian nations are balancing relations with major global powers while pursuing economic growth and regional stability. China remains Thailand’s largest trading partner and a major source of foreign investment, tourism, and infrastructure financing.
Officials from both countries are expected to use the visit to reaffirm their commitment to expanding practical cooperation and strengthening diplomatic engagement as geopolitical and economic challenges continue to evolve across the Asia-Pacific region.
