Farmers across Ivory Coast, the world’s largest cocoa producer, say more sunshine is needed in the country’s key cocoa growing regions to support the development of the upcoming main crop.

According to growers, below average rainfall and cooler than normal temperatures last week have slowed crop development ahead of the September to February harvest season.

While recent weather conditions have helped maintain soil moisture, farmers say extended periods of sunshine are now essential to promote healthy pod growth, improve bean quality, and maximise yields.

The main cocoa harvest is a critical period for Ivory Coast’s agricultural sector and the global chocolate industry, with weather conditions closely monitored by producers and international commodity markets.

Farmers remain hopeful that improved weather in the coming weeks will strengthen the crop and support a successful harvest later this year.
