Authorities investigate possible human-caused fire while evacuations continue in eastern Washington
Authorities in eastern Washington have arrested a suspected arsonist as multiple wildfires continue to burn in and around the Spokane area, forcing evacuations, damaging property, and straining firefighting resources across the region.
The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect was taken into custody after investigators received reports of suspicious activity near one of the active fire zones. Officials have not yet released the suspect’s identity or announced formal charges, but detectives said the investigation is ongoing and additional evidence is being reviewed.
Fires spread amid hot, windy conditions
Several wildfires have been burning across Spokane County and surrounding parts of eastern Washington, fueled by dry vegetation, high temperatures, and gusty winds that have accelerated fire growth and complicated containment efforts. Fire crews from local, state, and federal agencies have been deployed to protect homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure.
Emergency officials reported that evacuation orders and warnings remain in effect for a number of communities, with residents urged to leave threatened areas immediately and avoid roads being used by firefighters and emergency responders. Temporary shelters have been opened for displaced residents, and air quality advisories have been issued as smoke spreads across the Spokane metropolitan area.
Investigation focuses on fire origin
