Ukraine is reportedly seeking approval from Elon Musk and SpaceX to use drones equipped with Starlink satellite connectivity to target Russian ballistic missile launchers located deep inside Russian territory.
The reported request comes as Ukraine faces a shortage of Patriot air defence interceptor missiles while Russian ballistic-missile attacks continue to place pressure on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
According to reports, Ukrainian officials believe Starlink connectivity could allow drones to maintain communications over longer distances and potentially reach mobile Russian missile launchers as far as 200 kilometres inside Russia.
The proposed system would be aimed at locating and striking mobile missile launchers before they could be used to launch attacks against Ukrainian targets.
However, Musk has reportedly rejected the request, citing concerns about escalation and the use of Starlink technology for offensive military operations.
The issue has reportedly reached the highest levels of government, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy seeking assistance from U.S. President Donald Trump in persuading Musk to reconsider the decision.
Starlink has played a significant role in Ukraine’s communications infrastructure since Russia’s full scale invasion, providing connectivity to military and civilian users in areas where conventional communications have been disrupted.
The reported request highlights the increasingly important role of commercial satellite technology in modern warfare, while also raising questions about the limits of private companies in providing technology that can directly support military operations.
For Kyiv, the priority is strengthening its ability to defend against Russia’s ballistic-missile attacks. For Musk and SpaceX, however, approving offensive use of Starlink could carry significant geopolitical and escalation risks.
The dispute underscores the growing intersection between technology companies, satellite communications and national security, as both sides of the Russia-Ukraine war seek increasingly sophisticated tools for the battlefield.
