Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has dismissed the country’s government following the election of a new legislature, marking another major step in the Central Asian nation’s political transition under its recently adopted constitutional framework.
Tokayev signed the dismissal decree on Friday, August 28, 2026, after Kazakhstan held its first legislative election under a new unicameral parliamentary system. The newly elected legislature, known as the Kurultai, is scheduled to begin its first session as the country moves to implement the new political structure.
The government’s dismissal follows the parliamentary election held on August 23, in which the pro-government Adilet party secured just over 71% of the vote, according to Kazakhstan’s Central Election Commission. Four other parties also secured seats, although international observers and analysts have noted that the parties entering parliament broadly support Tokayev’s administration.
The outgoing cabinet will continue carrying out its duties until a new government is approved, ensuring continuity in the administration of the state during the transition. Under Kazakhstan’s new Constitution, the government is required to resign its powers before the newly elected Kurultai.
The political changes follow a sweeping constitutional overhaul that replaced Kazakhstan’s former two-chamber Parliament with a single legislative chamber. The reforms have also expanded presidential authority and created the position of vice president.
The election and subsequent government reshuffle are expected to further consolidate Tokayev’s political influence. Reuters reported that the election result is likely to strengthen the president’s control over Kazakhstan, Central Asia’s largest economy and an important exporter of oil, gas and minerals.
The formation of a new cabinet will now be closely watched as Tokayev prepares to work with the newly elected Kurultai and implement the next phase of his political and economic reform programme.
