China’s Humanoid Robots Are Advancing Fast but They Still Aren’t Ready to Take Your Job

China is rapidly expanding its humanoid robotics industry. However, despite impressive demonstrations of speed and movement, these machines remain far from capable of reliably performing most human jobs independently.

Robots Still Struggle With Basic Tasks

A news media outlet investigation published on August 27, 2026, found that humanoid robots being developed and trained in China still struggle with basic real-world tasks.

At a training centre in southern China, human instructors use headsets and motion-control equipment to teach robots activities such as sorting crates, packing products and preparing drinks. Some movements can require dozens or even hundreds of attempts before producing a usable result.

The process highlights one of the industry’s biggest challenges: teaching robots to operate consistently in unpredictable environments rather than simply repeating pre-programmed movements.

China Dominates the Humanoid Robot Market

The technology is nevertheless developing rapidly. China accounted for about 95% of the roughly 20,000 humanoid robots shipped globally in 2025, according to the Reuters investigation.

The sector has also received substantial government backing. More than $230 million in subsidies was reportedly provided during the first part of 2026 alone, reflecting Beijing’s ambition to establish China as a global leader in robotics and artificial intelligence.

Athletic Demonstrations Show Physical Progress

Recent demonstrations have highlighted the gap between physical performance and practical intelligence.

At Beijing’s World Humanoid Robot Games, Chinese robots broke several human athletic records, including the 100-metre sprint. Tiangong Ultra ultimately recorded a time of 8.64 seconds, well below Usain Bolt’s human world record of 9.58 seconds.

Such performances demonstrate how quickly robotic hardware is improving. Robots are becoming faster, more balanced and more capable of handling demanding physical movements.

Speed Does Not Equal Intelligence

However, running quickly is very different from carrying out unpredictable workplace tasks.

Robots still have difficulty with activities requiring dexterity, visual understanding, precise manipulation and the ability to recover when something goes wrong. A machine may be able to complete a task under controlled conditions but fail when an object is moved, a surface changes or an unexpected obstacle appears.

Competitions have therefore increasingly focused on practical challenges such as plugging cables, industrial assembly, restaurant service and handling objects. These tasks provide a more realistic test of whether humanoid robots can function effectively outside laboratories and demonstrations.

Labour Shortages Are Driving Development

China’s push is partly driven by the country’s ageing and shrinking workforce.

Government agencies and manufacturers see humanoid robots as a potential way to address labour shortages while strengthening the country’s position in advanced manufacturing. Robots could eventually support workers in factories, warehouses, logistics centres and service industries.

Companies including UBTech and Unitree are among those competing to turn humanoid robots into commercially viable products. Their success will depend not only on improving hardware but also on reducing costs and making the machines reliable enough for everyday use.

General-Purpose Robots Are Still Years Away

For now, experts and industry leaders say a major breakthrough in general-purpose robotic intelligence is still years away.

The challenge is no longer simply making robots walk, run or lift objects. Developers must give them the ability to understand unfamiliar situations, make decisions and perform a wide range of tasks safely and reliably.

This requires advances in artificial intelligence, sensors, battery technology, motor systems and training methods. Robots also need to learn from relatively small numbers of demonstrations instead of requiring hundreds of repeated attempts for every new movement.

A Competitive Experiment With Long-Term Potential

China’s humanoid robotics boom represents both a major technological opportunity and a highly competitive experiment.

While robots are unlikely to replace large numbers of workers immediately, rapid advances in artificial intelligence, sensors, hardware and training data could gradually bring them closer to useful roles in factories, logistics, services and eventually homes.

For now, China’s humanoid robots are best understood as promising machines in development rather than fully capable replacements for human workers.
