Russian President Vladimir Putin has said there is still a possibility of reaching a peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine, while Kyiv described recent diplomatic developments as creating a “new dynamic” toward resolving the conflict.

Speaking at an economic forum in Russia’s Far East, Putin said several countries, including the United States and China, were prepared to support a potential peace settlement. However, he stressed that any agreement would ultimately need to be reached directly between Russia and Ukraine.

Putin’s comments represent a notable shift in tone after repeated statements from Moscow that have emphasized Russia’s military position and demands for a settlement on its terms. Earlier this week, Putin said Russia was making gains on the battlefield while also indicating that discussions could continue under certain conditions.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also pointed to what he described as a new dynamic in international diplomatic efforts. The comments suggest that Kyiv sees increased engagement among the United States, China and other countries as potentially creating space for renewed negotiations.

Despite the diplomatic signals, major obstacles remain. Putin criticized Ukraine’s recent drone activity and Kyiv’s warnings about aviation risks over Russian airspace, arguing that such actions make a political settlement more difficult. Russia has also continued military operations against Ukrainian targets, while Ukraine has intensified attacks against Russian infrastructure and other strategic targets.

The conflict therefore remains far from resolved, with no new peace agreement announced and substantial differences still separating Moscow and Kyiv. Nevertheless, the latest statements from both sides indicate that diplomacy remains active alongside continued fighting.

International efforts to end the war are expected to remain focused on establishing conditions for direct negotiations, securing meaningful guarantees for Ukraine and addressing Russia’s demands as both sides weigh the possibility of a future settlement.
