U.S. Vice President JD Vance has sparked debate after saying he is focused on doing “as much of God’s work as possible,” even if his efforts ultimately contribute to what Christians describe as the “end times.”

Vance made the remarks during an interview with evangelical Christian podcaster Bryce Crawford, released on August 31. The conversation explored Vance’s Catholic faith, biblical prophecy, politics, artificial intelligence and his views on the possibility of humanity entering the final period described in Christian theology.

Vance said his priority is to carry out what he believes is God’s work. He added that if those efforts resulted in the end times, he would accept that outcome, while also saying he would welcome a future in which his actions helped build a better world that continued for generations.

The vice president also said there were aspects of the modern world that made him “not shocked” by the possibility that the Antichrist could already be present. However, he stopped short of identifying anyone as the Antichrist and reiterated that he does not want to become consumed by apocalyptic speculation.

The discussion also touched on artificial intelligence. Vance expressed concern about AI replacing human relationships and described some developments surrounding the technology as carrying what he characterized as a troubling spiritual dimension.

Vance’s comments have attracted significant attention because of his position as vice president and his influence within the Republican Party. Critics have questioned how his religious views could intersect with political decision-making, while supporters have characterized the remarks as an expression of personal faith rather than a declaration that he wants to bring about an apocalyptic event.

Vance has increasingly spoken publicly about his religious journey. He converted to Catholicism in 2019 and recently published a memoir about his return to faith, making religion a more prominent part of his public profile.

The remarks have nevertheless intensified discussion about the role of Christian theology and end-times beliefs in contemporary American politics, particularly as Vance remains one of the country’s most prominent conservative political figures.
