South African Police Probe Killings of Seven Women as Ramaphosa Vows Action

South African police are investigating the deaths of seven women whose bodies were discovered in and around Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg, over the past two months, in a case that has intensified concerns over violence against women and raised questions about whether the killings could be linked.

The victims, most of whom were in their 20s and 30s, were found in circumstances that have alarmed investigators. Some were naked or partially clothed and showed signs of sexual violence, while one body was found in an advanced state of decomposition. Police have not yet established whether the deaths are connected or whether they involve a single perpetrator, several suspects or possible copycat crimes.

Ramaphosa Demands Urgent Action

President Cyril Ramaphosa has vowed that authorities will leave “no stone will be left unturned” in investigating the killings. The cases have triggered widespread concern from civil society and sporting organisations, adding pressure on law-enforcement agencies to identify those responsible.

Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane also pledged that SAPS would intensify efforts to identify, trace and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Growing Concern in Ekurhuleni

The latest case involves a seventh woman whose body was discovered in the Kwa-Thema, Springs area on Tuesday. Police have issued an alert as investigators work to establish links between the cases.

One of the victims was identified as Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo, who had disappeared after leaving home for an afternoon run before her body was later discovered.

Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and assist investigators with information that could help establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Spotlight on South Africa’s Gender-Based Violence Crisis

The killings have once again placed South Africa’s persistent crisis of gender-based violence and femicide under the spotlight.

The country continues to experience exceptionally high levels of violent crime, with official crime statistics indicating an average of about 60 homicides a day. The latest killings have renewed concerns over the safety of women, particularly as South Africa approaches municipal elections in November.

For investigators, the immediate priority is determining whether the seven deaths are connected and identifying those responsible. For families and communities, the growing demand is for swift arrests, accountability and greater protection for women.
