Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected allegations that Israel persecutes minorities, describing international criticism of Israel and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as part of what he called a global propaganda campaign.
Netanyahu made the remarks on September 16, 2026, during a cornerstone-laying ceremony in the Lavi Forest near the Golani Junction for a memorial honouring fallen Arabic-speaking Christian IDF soldiers.
Netanyahu Defends Israel’s Treatment of Christians
Addressing the ceremony, Netanyahu said Israel was being portrayed internationally as responsible for war crimes and as a persecutor of minorities. He rejected those descriptions and presented Israel as an “island of tolerance” in the Middle East.
He also highlighted the service of Arabic-speaking Christians in the IDF, arguing that their participation demonstrated what he described as Israel’s commitment to integrating different religious and ethnic communities.
Netanyahu further claimed that Israel is the only country in the region where the Christian community is “flourishing and growing,” contrasting Israel’s situation with conditions faced by Christians elsewhere in the Middle East. These remarks reflect the prime minister’s characterization of the regional situation rather than an independently established assessment.
Ceremony Highlights Christian IDF Service
The memorial initiative was presented as a tribute to Christian soldiers who died while serving in Israel’s military. Netanyahu said the ceremony itself challenged allegations that Christians are persecuted in Israel, emphasizing that Christian citizens also serve in defending the country.
The comments come amid continuing international scrutiny of Israel’s conduct during the Gaza war, including allegations concerning civilian harm and treatment of Palestinians. Israeli authorities have rejected a number of such allegations and disputes remain over the interpretation of military actions and evidence surrounding the conflict.
