Iran Says US Talks Remain Ongoing as Tehran Reviews American Proposal

Iran says diplomatic contacts with the United States remain ongoing, with Tehran reviewing Washington’s latest proposal and preparing a response within the coming days.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Thursday that messages between the two sides continue to be exchanged through intermediaries. He said Tehran had submitted its own proposal, known as the “seven-day plan,” and had received Washington’s response, which Iranian officials are now examining.

The latest diplomatic effort comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran and continuing uncertainty over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. Iran has proposed reopening the strategic waterway within seven days under certain conditions, while the United States has been seeking commitments related to Iran’s nuclear programme and broader regional security.

Araghchi said Tehran expects to communicate its response within the next few days, suggesting that despite deep disagreements, diplomatic channels have not been closed.

The negotiations are being conducted indirectly through mediators, rather than through direct talks between American and Iranian officials. Qatar and other regional actors have played an important role in carrying messages between the two sides.

The diplomatic activity comes as tensions remain high in the Gulf. Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely disrupted, while recent attacks and threats against commercial vessels have increased concerns over energy supplies and global markets.

A major obstacle remains the sequencing of concessions. Iran has focused heavily on restoring security and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, while Washington continues to place emphasis on Iran’s nuclear activities. Tehran has also rejected suggestions that it has agreed to broad nuclear concessions in exchange for sanctions relief.

The latest exchange therefore offers a potential diplomatic opening, but significant differences remain. Both sides face pressure to prevent the conflict from escalating further, with the continuing crisis carrying implications for regional security, global energy markets and international trade.
