Witkoff to Meet Putin as Trump Presses Kyiv to End Ukraine War

U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin following what Washington described as constructive talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Norway, as President Donald Trump intensifies pressure on Kyiv to reach a settlement to the war.

The planned meeting with Putin marks another diplomatic effort by Washington to explore a possible path towards ending Russia’s war in Ukraine, which has continued to dominate international security discussions and strain relations between Moscow and Western governments.

Norway Talks Signal Diplomatic Progress

A U.S. official said discussions in Oslo involving Zelenskiy had been constructive, with Ukraine presenting new ideas and proposals aimed at advancing efforts to end the conflict.

The talks also involved the leaders of Norway and Finland, alongside European and NATO representatives. According to the official, participants made “meaningful progress” towards developing a coordinated approach to engaging Russia.

The discussions highlight growing efforts to align Ukraine’s position with those of its European partners and the United States as diplomatic channels remain active.

Trump Urges Kyiv to Reach a Settlement

Trump has said it is time for Ukraine to end the war, reinforcing his administration’s push for a negotiated resolution. His position places renewed pressure on Kyiv to consider proposals that could bring the fighting to an end.

However, the prospects for a settlement remain uncertain, with major questions surrounding the terms of any agreement, Ukraine’s security guarantees and the future of territories occupied by Russia.

For Kyiv, any deal would need to address the country’s sovereignty and long-term security, while Moscow’s willingness to accept proposed terms remains a critical factor in determining whether negotiations can succeed.

Putin Meeting Could Shape Next Phase of Negotiations

Witkoff’s expected meeting with Putin could provide Washington with an opportunity to assess Russia’s position following the Oslo discussions and determine whether there is room for progress towards a negotiated settlement.

The involvement of European and NATO representatives also underscores the importance of coordination among Ukraine’s partners, particularly on security arrangements and the broader implications of any agreement.

Although the latest discussions have raised hopes of diplomatic movement, meaningful progress will depend on whether the parties can bridge their differences and agree on terms that can be implemented in practice.

For now, the planned Putin meeting and Trump’s renewed call for an end to the war signal an intensification of diplomatic efforts, but a lasting peace agreement remains uncertain.
