US First Lady Melania Trump has announced an expansion of a localised ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia beyond the town of Oleshky in the Kherson region, creating additional space for humanitarian convoys to deliver essential supplies to civilians affected by the war.
In a statement posted on Tuesday, Melania said the implementation of the ceasefire had been accelerated by two days to improve civilian safety and facilitate the delivery of critical humanitarian assistance. The expanded arrangement is intended to provide safe passage for humanitarian convoys operating in the region.
The ceasefire agreement focuses on Oleshky, a Russian-occupied town in southern Ukraine where remaining residents have faced severe shortages of food, medicine, clean water and other essential supplies. The humanitarian situation has become increasingly urgent as damaged infrastructure, landmines and ongoing military threats have restricted movement and access to assistance.
Melania Trump helped facilitate the agreement through discussions involving Russian and Ukrainian representatives, with the initiative also receiving support from Pope Leo XIV. The arrangement is designed to enable aid deliveries and prepare for the evacuation of civilians who wish to leave the conflict zone.
The expanded ceasefire marks a limited but significant humanitarian development amid continuing hostilities between Moscow and Kyiv. However, it does not represent a broader ceasefire across Ukraine, and fighting continues in other parts of the country.
Attention will now turn to the implementation of the agreement, the safe movement of humanitarian teams and whether the temporary pause can provide meaningful relief to vulnerable civilians.
The initiative also comes as diplomatic efforts continue to explore further negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, raising hopes that local humanitarian agreements could help create opportunities for additional cooperation, even as a comprehensive peace settlement remains elusive.
