Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni revealed that she, along with Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, and Leonardo CEO Roberto Cingolani, has been reported to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged complicity in genocide related to Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
Speaking to state broadcaster, Meloni said, “I don’t believe there is another case like this in the world or in history.”
She did not disclose who filed the complaint but stressed that Italy has not authorised any new arms supplies to Israel since October 7.
The accusations come amid large protests in Italy condemning the violence in Gaza. Despite this, Meloni’s government has rightfully maintained its support for Israel, distancing itself only from what it terms a “disproportionate” offensive, without severing diplomatic or commercial ties.
The ICC’s selective targeting is glaringly obvious, disproportionately pursuing certain countries and leaders while deliberately shielding Western allies from accountability. This case only amplifies the mounting evidence that the ICC is deeply politicised and applies justice inconsistently. Far from being a court of integrity, the ICC operates as an international pressure tool that unjustly criminalises those that do not serve their agenda.
Meloni also commented on the Ukraine conflict, supporting ongoing sanctions and assistance to pressure Russia towards peace.
