Trump Expected to Announce Details of South Korea’s U.S. Investment Plan on Friday

Seoul is preparing to unveil major investments in U.S. energy, nuclear power and shipbuilding as Washington presses for progress on a $350 billion commitment

U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to announce details of South Korea’s planned investment in the United States on Friday, September 18, according to South Korean lawmaker Yoon Hu-duk, as Washington and Seoul work to finalize the terms of a major economic agreement.

The announcement would provide greater clarity on how South Korea intends to fulfill a $350 billion investment commitment agreed as part of a 2025 trade deal that helped secure a 15% cap on U.S. tariffs on South Korean imports.

The proposed investment is expected to cover several strategically important sectors, including shipbuilding, nuclear energy, liquefied natural gas, carbon capture and other U.S. energy projects.

Nuclear and Energy Projects in Focus

Among the projects under discussion are plans for as many as eight nuclear reactors, a major natural-gas project in Texas and an Alaska LNG initiative. South Korea is also considering investment in nuclear-material reprocessing and carbon-capture technology.

Recent reports have put the potential value of the energy-related package at more than $100 billion, although South Korean officials have stressed that negotiations are still underway and that not all details have been finalized.

South Korean Finance Minister nominee Lee Hyoung-il declined to provide detailed figures during a parliamentary hearing, citing ongoing consultations between the two governments.

$350 Billion Commitment Under Pressure

The broader agreement includes $200 billion in strategic investments and $150 billion earmarked for shipbuilding cooperation. Seoul has faced growing pressure from Washington to demonstrate concrete progress on the commitment.

A key concern for South Korea is ensuring that the investment structure remains financially sustainable. Seoul has previously sought to limit the pace of investment, with officials discussing an annual ceiling intended to prevent excessive pressure on the country’s finances.

South Korean officials are expected to brief parliamentary committees on Thursday ahead of the anticipated U.S. announcement.

Strategic Importance for Washington and Seoul

The investment package is increasingly significant beyond trade. The United States is seeking to expand domestic manufacturing, energy production and shipbuilding capacity, while South Korea is looking to deepen its economic and strategic partnership with Washington.

Shipbuilding has emerged as a particularly important area of cooperation because South Korean companies possess major global shipbuilding capabilities. Washington views greater Korean participation in the U.S. shipbuilding industry as a way to strengthen American maritime capacity.

The energy projects could also support the rapidly expanding U.S. demand for electricity, particularly from artificial intelligence data centres and advanced manufacturing.

Trump Announcement Could End Months of Uncertainty

The expected announcement comes after months of uncertainty over how and when Seoul would implement its investment pledge. South Korean officials have repeatedly indicated that negotiations were continuing, while Washington has pushed for a clearer commitment.

If confirmed on Friday, the announcement could provide a significant boost to U.S.-South Korea economic ties and demonstrate progress on one of the most closely watched elements of their trade relationship.

For Seoul, however, the challenge will be balancing the strategic benefits of closer ties with Washington against the financial and commercial risks of committing hundreds of billions of dollars to projects in the United States.
