South Korea, Egypt Upgrade Ties to Strategic Partnership

South Korea and Egypt have elevated their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership, marking a significant expansion of cooperation between Seoul and Cairo across trade, investment, defence, energy and technology.

The announcement was made by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung following talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Seoul during the Egyptian leader’s state visit.

Trade and Economic Cooperation

The two leaders also agreed to launch negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), building on their agreement last year to pursue a broader trade and economic pact.

The proposed agreement is intended to create a stronger framework for trade and investment while expanding cooperation beyond conventional market access. Seoul said the partnership could also support emerging industries and strengthen economic ties between Asia and Africa.

Energy, Technology and Infrastructure

South Korea and Egypt signed or revised 12 memorandums of understanding covering areas including shipbuilding, clean energy, power infrastructure, information and communications technology and cultural cooperation.

Lee said South Korean expertise could contribute to Egypt’s development of environmentally friendly shipbuilding, while cooperation in power infrastructure is expected to support energy security and reliable electricity supplies.

Defence Cooperation to Expand

Defence cooperation is also expected to become an important part of the new strategic partnership.

The leaders pointed to the joint production of K9 self-propelled howitzers as a successful example of bilateral defence-industry cooperation. Lee said future collaboration could move beyond weapons exports towards local production, technology transfer and strengthening Egypt’s industrial capabilities.

Wider Regional Cooperation

The summit also covered international and regional security issues, including developments in the Middle East and on the Korean Peninsula. Lee outlined Seoul’s position favouring peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula, while the two sides reaffirmed the importance of stability and safe navigation along international maritime routes.

Egypt has also expressed interest in expanding Korean investment in sectors including advanced manufacturing, electronics, automotive production and renewable energy.

A New Phase in Bilateral Relations

The strategic partnership represents a new phase in South Korea-Egypt relations, building on years of economic, industrial and diplomatic cooperation.

With CEPA negotiations now set to begin and cooperation expanding into defence, energy, technology and infrastructure, Seoul and Cairo are seeking to translate the upgraded relationship into greater investment, trade and long-term economic cooperation.
