Trump Administration Revokes More Than 300,000 US Visas

The Trump administration has revoked more than 300,000 US visas since President Donald Trump began his second term in January 2025, marking an acceleration in the government’s immigration enforcement campaign.

The US State Department announced the figure on October 20, 2026, saying the administration had cancelled visas at a faster rate than any previous US administration.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the government maintained a zero-tolerance approach towards foreign nationals who violate US laws, commit fraud or threaten national security.

The latest total represents a significant increase from the more than 175,000 visa revocations reported by the department in August, highlighting the intensification of the administration’s immigration policies.

Criminal Offences and Security Concerns

According to the administration, visa revocations form part of broader efforts to strengthen border security and address criminal activity, immigration violations and fraudulent applications.

The crackdown has also involved stricter screening of visa applicants, including increased scrutiny of social media accounts.

Among the cases attracting attention are visa cancellations involving foreign nationals who participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations against Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, as well as individuals whose social media comments about the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk drew scrutiny from authorities.

The administration has defended its approach as necessary to protect public safety and enforce immigration laws.

Rights Groups Raise Civil Liberties Concerns

The sweeping measures have prompted criticism from civil liberties and immigrant rights advocates, who argue that the crackdown risks undermining due process and freedom of expression.

Critics have raised concerns about the use of national security justifications in cases involving political expression, warning that stricter enforcement could disproportionately affect minority communities and contribute to allegations of racial profiling.

The dispute highlights a broader debate over the balance between national security, immigration enforcement and constitutional protections for people living in the United States.

Legal Immigration Faces Increased Scrutiny

Although Trump campaigned on stopping illegal immigration, his administration has also introduced measures that make legal immigration more difficult, including stricter screening procedures and higher fees for certain work visas.

The visa revocations signal that the administration’s enforcement strategy extends beyond border crossings to foreign nationals already in the country under existing immigration permissions.

The latest announcement is expected to keep immigration policy at the centre of political and legal debate, particularly as affected individuals and advocacy groups challenge measures they consider excessive or unfair.

With more than 300,000 visas revoked since January 2025, the Trump administration is reinforcing its commitment to a tougher immigration system, while critics continue to question the consequences for civil liberties, legal migration and America’s international reputation.
