UK Releases List of U.S. Products That May Face Retaliatory Tariffs in Ongoing Trade Talks

On Wednesday, Britain unveiled a 400-page list detailing U.S. products that could face retaliatory tariffs as a response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs on British imports. This move comes despite ongoing trade negotiations with Washington.

The “indicative long list” includes a variety of items, ranging from binoculars and bourbon whiskey to car parts and cheese. It also spans goods such as petrol, diesel, and electric vehicles, alongside food items like meat and fish. However, the British government stressed that not all of these goods would necessarily be subjected to tariffs.

In contrast to the swift retaliatory measures taken by the European Union and other countries, Britain has opted for a “calm and measured” response to Trump’s 10% tariffs, which are among the lowest in a broader set of levies imposed on various nations.

The government released a list of around 8,000 U.S. product categories, representing roughly 27% of Britain’s imports from the U.S., that could potentially be hit with tariffs in the future. This list will now be open for a four-week consultation period with businesses.

Jonathan Reynolds, the Business Secretary, emphasized that his primary goal is to secure a trade deal with the U.S., but the consultation process is essential to keep all options on the table.

Reynolds explained, “The discussions with the U.S. will continue to reflect our commitment to ensuring economic stability while advocating for a trading relationship that benefits businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.” He also noted that if a deal is reached, the consultation would be suspended, and any planned measures would be canceled.
