Brazil’s Supreme Court has directed former President Jair Bolsonaro to begin serving a prison term of just over 27 years in connection with a case involving an alleged attempt to overturn the 2022 election results. The order was issued on Tuesday by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who instructed that Bolsonaro be held at the Federal Police facility in Brasília. He has been there since Saturday, after authorities reported that he had removed his court-mandated ankle monitor.
Bolsonaro received a sentence in September of 27 years and three months. Although the incarceration order was issued by one justice, it still requires confirmation from a four-member panel of the Supreme Court. Earlier on Tuesday, the court formally concluded the case, determining that all appeal options had been exhausted.
His lawyers, who have a custody hearing scheduled for Wednesday, have not yet made public comments on the latest ruling. One attorney said in a recent interview that the case was finalized too quickly and that further appeal opportunities should have been permitted.
Before his detention, Bolsonaro had spent more than 100 days under house arrest in a separate investigation. In a hearing on Sunday, he said he removed the ankle device because he believed it contained an additional tracking mechanism, which he attributed to confusion caused by medication.
