Turkey Evaluating Potential Measures in Event of Iran-US Conflict, Source says

ANKARA Turkey is assessing a wide range of potential responses in the event of a military conflict between Iran and the United States, a Turkish diplomatic source told Reuters on Wednesday, as regional tensions rise amid renewed negotiations and continued U.S. military deployments.

The comments come against a backdrop of escalated rhetoric and concern over a possible confrontation between Tehran and Washington, after months of strained ties over Iran’s nuclear programme and broader geopolitical frictions in the Middle East.

Safeguarding Citizens, Opposing Military Action

According to the anonymous source, Ankara is reviewing “all aspects of the measures that could be taken in the event of a negative development,” with a particular focus on ensuring the safety of Turkish citizens if hostilities break out. “All scenarios are being considered,” the source told Reuters, but added that any actions that would violate Iran’s sovereignty are “out of the question.”

Turkey a NATO member that shares a long border with Iran has reiterated its position against military intervention and regional destabilisation. Senior officials have signaled that Ankara remains committed to diplomatic engagement and dialogue with both Tehran and Washington to prevent escalation.

Diplomacy Amid Rising Tensions

The latest statement from Ankara follows increased diplomatic and military maneuvering across the Middle East. Washington has stepped up its military presence in the region, including deploying additional warships and aircraft, while Iran has both criticised U.S. pressure and said it remains open to diplomatic solutions to avoid conflict.

Iranian officials have stressed that a negotiated settlement remains possible if diplomacy is prioritised, even as they warn of fierce retaliation should their territory be attacked.

Disinformation Claims and Contingency Planning

The Turkish presidency’s Center for Countering Disinformation also issued statements denying recent media claims that Ankara is planning to enter Iranian territory as part of its contingency planning. Officials described such reports as unsubstantiated and reiterated that Turkey respects the territorial integrity and sovereignty of its neighbours.

Nonetheless, other reports have suggested Turkey is updating emergency protocols in anticipation of potential spill-over effects, such as managing refugee flows along its eastern frontier in the event of a major conflict. Analysts note that Ankara’s past experience with large-scale displacement particularly during the Syrian civil war informs its planning and concerns about border security.

Regional Implications

A possible U.S.-Iran conflict would have wide-ranging repercussions across the Middle East, potentially drawing in allied states and impacting energy markets, migration patterns and international security dynamics. Turkey’s strategic location and ties with both Western and regional powers place it in a unique and delicate diplomatic position.

For now, Ankara appears focused on hedging against risk, advocating for de-escalation and preparing to protect its national interests should tensions erupt into open conflict.
